Smart-Selling Checklist

Research the price — Print out your documentation to support your asking price during negotiations.

Advertising — Use MAGNATIZE signage, online advertising and the newspaper classifieds to sell your car.

Lienholder — Contact your bank or loan company to make arrangements before the sale.

Making appointments — Get names and phone numbers. Don't negotiate prices on the phone. Call 15 minutes before to confirm appointment.

Showing the car — Follow your game plan. Support your price with documentation. Don't get pressured to accept a low-ball offer; let 'em walk. Have a good buddy for support.

Test Drives — Ask to see a license and insurance card. Come along for the test drive to answer questions and navigate the neighborhood.

Mechanical Inspections — Consider getting a pre-sell inspection done by a certified service to avoid hard-ball tactics during final negotiations.

Documents, etc. — Get your papers in order: Title, smog certificate, repair records, warranties (and if desired, Carfax title report). Also, keys, lug nut tool, security codes, etc.

Financial Transaction — Put any terms in writing. Fill out the bill of sale. Don't sign the title without cash or bank draft in hand.

License Plates — Take the plates off the car or send a release of liability to the DMV depending on your state's requirements.
